Whooping Cranes are Endangered species. Mainly they are endangered in Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, North/South Dakota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oaklahoma, Texas, Utah and Wyoming. In 1999, there were 180 in the wild and 130 in captivity. Numbers decrease yearly, but people are doing something about trying to rescue these creatures from permanent extinction.

They are egg-laying creatures whose color ranges from soft blue to grey-green or tan with splotches. These splothches provide camouflage and blend into the colors of the nest made of mud, reeds and other vegetation. Two eggs are laid, but only one chick usually survives. They are born w/ blue eyes that change color as they grow older and vary from a light blonde to dark cinnamon brown.

Only 1/4 chicks survive their first migration. Whooping Cranes fly about 35-40 mph and can travel up to about 2,500 miles away from their home for the winter.
