Spotlight on Animal Awareness Club
by Sarah Finecey
Villa Julie's Animal Awareness Club, formerly known as the Animal Rights Club,
encourages all animal lovers to join the group. The club no longer focuses mainly
on cats and dogs but has expanded it's focus to wildlife and other small animals
as well. The purpose of the Animal Awareness Club is to "educate Villa
Julie College students, faculty and staff and the general public about responsible
pet ownership through various educational workshops, community service projects
and social events," according to their website. Students with a common
interest in animals began the club about three years ago. It currently has about
40 members, and anyone in the VJC community is welcome to join by emailing club
president Dianna Lindeman. Every month, the group holds a one-hour meeting in
the Student Union. Scholarship hours are available to those who participate
in activities, fundraisers, and meetings. The club is closely allied with the
Humane Society of Baltimore County and the SPCA. Its website has links to those
organizations, as well as to the clubs calendar of events, animal pictures and
more. In February, the club will hold a fundraiser selling scratch off lottery
tickets. Proceeds will help the club adopt a wildlife animal. An SPCA walk-a-thon
and a trip to the Washington Zoo are planned for April.

On April 20, 2005, Outgoing President, Dianna Lindeman, recieved a VJC award for Excellence in Leadership 2005. Congrats!
